A Davenport man already on the run from the law was arrested last week after police say he killed one family member and severely injured another.

According to authorities, Pedro Vega Jr. was hiding out at his aunt’s house to avoid capture for aggravated battery of his estranged wife. Polk County deputies indicate that they were called to the residence shortly after midnight on Wednesday to respond to an armed break in at the home of Amanda Stokes, Vega’s estranged wife and the alleged victim of his aggravated assault.

The deputies’ report indicates that Vega entered the home carrying a rifle, firing off an unknown number of rounds upon entering. They say that the residence’s other resident, Caine Espinoza, returned fire, believing that he had struck Vega with a round.

They continued by saying that Vega fled the residence in a pick-up truck prior to their arrival. Deputies say that, upon arriving, they were informed that family members of his lived next door, and they followed a trail of blood from Stokes’ residence to the other residence in question.

Arriving at the second residence, deputies say they discovered Pedro Vega Sr. bound and partially gagged with tape. The 70-year-old Vega Sr. had also endured 23 stab wounds, allegedly inflicted upon him by his 46-year-old son. Deputies also found the body of Vega Jr.’s aunt Rosa Iris Vega, allegedly attacked and killed by Vega Jr.

Pedro Vega Sr. was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital. He’s expected to recover from his wounds.

Meanwhile, Vega Jr. was arrested by FHP troopers in Orange County without incident shortly afterwards. He was treated for gunshot injuries prior to being taken to jail.

Vega Jr. was booked into Polk County Jail on charges of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted first-degree murder, armed burglary of a dwelling, felony in possession of a firearm, false imprisonment, burglary with assault and battery, aggravated domestic violence, and probation violation, as he has a prior conviction of sexual battery, for which he served a 13-year prison sentence. He is being held without bond.
