Sextet Charged with Stealing Credit Card Numbers from Hillsborough Co., Pinellas Co. Gas Pumps

Six Hillsborough county residents are facing fraud charges and a seventh individual is still being sought for the same for allegedly participating in a scheme to illegally harvest credit card numbers using scanning machines placed on gas pumps.

Investigators with the Florida Attorney General’s Office say that the group installed skimming devices without the station owners’ consent at over forty gas stations in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. The devices captured at least forty individual credit card numbers. Though no numbers were released by the investigators, each one could potentially net the skimmer’s operator up to $1,000 of the victim’s money.

According to investigators, the group used the ill-gotten numbers to buy gasoline and equipment for use in selling that gasoline on the black market.

Yosmanis Alfonso Cruz, Elisio Omar Arbolaez Felipe, Yunierlys Gonzalez, Maykel Medina, Dasiel Parrado, and Dania Roig are all charged with crimes including fraudulent use of personal identification information, fraudulent use of a credit card, fraudulent use of personal identification of another, forgery of credit card, use of a scanning device to defraud, organized scheme to defraud using electronic device. Sentences for convictions on charges of that nature could result in certain of the above defendants facing a minimum ten-year prison sentence.

A seventh defendant, namely Jose A. Piniero, had not been apprehended at the time of the attorney general’s announcement.
