Clearwater Pro Se Defendant Sentenced to Life in Prison on Second-Degree Murder Conviction

A Clearwater man who acted as his own attorney at trial was convicted of second-degree murder last week by a Pinellas County jury.

Prosecutors say Daniel Edward Richards returned to his home via taxi cab after a significant stretch of drinking with a friend one night last summer. Upon arriving at the home he shared with his 81-year-old mother, authorities allege he savagely beat her, inflicting injuries on her including a handful of fractured ribs, punctured lungs, and brain trauma.

Richards allegedly phoned 9-1-1 the next morning to summon an ambulance, telling the dispatcher that his mother suffered a fall during the night. However, authorities say he admitted in a subsequent recorded telephone conversation to beating her. She survived the trauma for six weeks before finally succumbing in early September.

Richards was convicted of second-degree murder on Friday by a jury who subsequently fixed his penalty as life in the Florida prison system.
