Clearwater Man Faces DUI Charge After Allegedly Wrecking Stolen Car And Fleeing With Bottle In Hand

Clearwater police apprehended a man last week they say stole a vehicle, ran a red light, and careened into another vehicle prior to their arrival on the scene.

Per the arresting officers, Rico L. Hayes drove the stolen vehicle with a friend within to the intersection of S Keene Road and Druid Road, where it ultimately collided with a second car. No injuries were reported from among the passengers of the opposing vehicle.

Hayes’s passenger was not so lucky, however. Police say the unnamed individual in the stolen car remained in the back seat with unspecified injuries. Hayes fared better in the wreck, per law enforcement – well enough even to make an escape on foot after the collision.

The still-fleet-of-foot Hayes sprinted away from the scene, per the police, complete with a bottle of an unknown alcoholic beverage in hand. He was ultimately apprehended and taken to the Pinellas County Jail.

The 21-year-old Hayes was booked into jail on counts of grand theft auto, leaving the scene of a crash involving injury, driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, and on charges from last year of possession of a controlled substance and possession of cocaine. He’s currently being held without bail.
