Clearwater Firefighter Allegedly Asleep At the Wheel Arrested for Drunk Driving

A Clearwater firefighter found himself arrested on suspicion of drunk driving last week after a passer-by alerted authorities to a motorist apparently unresponsive at the wheel.

Pinellas authorities received reports in the early evening of April 10 that a man was slumped over the steering wheel of a 2001 Chevrolet light truck that was situated in a turning lane on Boca Ciega Drive near 75th Avenue.

Upon inspection by responding sheriff’s deputies, the man allegedly passed out at the steering wheel was Andrew Joseph Leeth. Alone in the vehicle, Leeth allegedly had bloodshot, watery eyes and smelled of alcoholic drink. After placing his car in park from drive, Leeth was removed from it and taken to Palms of Pasadena Hospital as a precautionary measure.

Though not yet handcuffed at that point, Leeth allegedly declined to submit a blood sample for testing. Deputies say he attempted to leave the hospital, and they report that they resorted to using Tazers to prevent him leaving. Leeth was officially arrested at that point, and a subsequent investigation of the police cruiser’s rear seat allegedly uncovered a quantity of cocaine that was not present prior to Leeth’s occupancy of it.

Leeth was booked into the Pinellas County Jail later that evening on charges of driving under the influence, resisting an officer without violence, and possession of a controlled substance. He subsequently bonded out the next morning upon posting a bond of $1,650.

Clearwater Fire and Rescue announced that Leeth was placed upon administrative leave shortly after his arrest, but the department declined to comment further on his future employment prospects, saying that they will defer such comments until the completion of an internal investigation of the charges.
