Another Tampa Area Doctor Charged with Illegal Prescriptions

Tampa Bay area doctor Kevin Mark Denny was indicted in federal court this week on felony drug charges – specifically, two counts of acting outside the scope of professional practice by dispensing and distributing oxycodone, hydrocodone and alprazolam (generic Xanax). Denny’s charges come on the heels of similar charges against two other Tampa area physicians – Jeffrey Friedlander and John Rew.

Denny has offices in Tierra Verde and on North Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in federal prison.

A search warrant was executed at Denny’s home yesterday, where investigators discovered crack cocaine, marijuana and other unidentified pills. Marijuana was also found in Denny’s Tampa office.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida alleged that Denny was employed by Shiloh Medical Group to work in a “small, one-doctor shop connected to a pharmacy,” and was paid to seek patients and write prescriptions.

After his arrest, Denny tested positive for cocaine and other drugs. He has surrendered his Drug Enforcement Administration license to prescribe.

Denny has not yet been released on bond but a federal magistrate indicated that he would hear arguments for release today or tomorrow.

Illegal prescriptions are clearly a hot topic among federal law enforcement agencies right now. Anyone who believes that they may be the subject of such an investigation in the Tampa Bay area and surrounding counties should contact a Tampa federal criminal defense attorney immediately. Much beneficial work on a case can often occur prior to the execution of an arrest warrant.

  2. KBM Says:

Based upon the federal court records, it appears that Denny pleaded guilty to two felony drug counts in September. He was scheduled for sentencing twice but that hearing has been postponed for unknown reasons. He has not yet been sentenced and the court records reflect no scheduled sentencing date at this time.
